Water Purifier in Pune & PCMC: Which RO Purifier Suits Your Area's Water?

Domestic RO water purifiers for homes in Pune and PCMC areas
Area Guide

Quick answer: If your home gets PMC or PCMC municipal water, an RO + UV purifier with a TDS controller is usually enough. UV/UF protection matters more than strong RO. If your society relies on borewell or tanker water, as many newer buildings on the city's edges do, you need a strong RO purifier and more frequent filter changes. Societies with hard water should add a central water softener. We test the TDS at your tap free before recommending anything.

Two flats ten kilometres apart in Pune can need completely different purifiers. A home in an older part of Kothrud on municipal supply has very different water from a new tower in Wagholi or Punawale that tops up with tankers. This guide explains how to work out what your water needs, area by area across Pune and PCMC.

Step 1: find out where your water comes from

Ask your society office or building manager, or check the bills. Most homes in Pune get one of three sources, or a mix:

  • Municipal supply (PMC or PCMC): treated at the plant and usually low in TDS. It can pick up contamination in old pipelines and building tanks.
  • Borewell: often higher in TDS and hardness. You may see white scale on taps and tiles, and the taste can be salty or heavy.
  • Tanker water: quality changes from load to load. It is common in summer and in societies where the municipal connection is not enough.

A ₹300–500 handheld TDS meter, or our free home test, tells you most of what you need. Under about 200 mg/L, UV/UF protection matters most. Above 500 mg/L, you need a strong RO purifier. For model prices, read our water purifier price guide for Pune.

West Pune and the IT corridor

Wakad, Hinjewadi, Baner, Balewadi, Aundh, Pashan, Bavdhan, Sus, Pimple Saudagar and Pimple Nilakh.

Older lanes in Aundh and Baner are mostly on municipal supply. Many newer societies in Hinjewadi's phases, Wakad, Balewadi and Sus top up with borewell or tanker water, especially from March to June. The result is water whose TDS can swing through the year.

What we usually recommend: RO + UV with a TDS controller, such as the Aqua+ or Aqua Classic. Choose the Purosis if tanker use is heavy or the family is large. Our store is in Wakad, so homes in this belt get the quickest installation and service.

Pimpri-Chinchwad (PCMC)

Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi, Akurdi, Pradhikaran, Bhosari, Moshi, Chikhali, Talawade, Ravet, Tathawade and Punawale.

The established parts of Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi and Akurdi are largely on PCMC supply. In the fast-growing pockets of Ravet, Tathawade, Punawale, Moshi and Chikhali, many societies depend partly on borewells and tankers, and hardness is a common complaint.

What we usually recommend: Aqua+ for homes on steady PCMC supply. Aqua Classic or Purosis for borewell or tanker water, with filter checks every 3–4 months. Add a softener if your geyser and taps scale up quickly.

East Pune

Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Wagholi, Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar and Lohegaon.

Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar and Viman Nagar are mostly on municipal supply. Wagholi, Lohegaon and parts of Kharadi and Hadapsar have many societies that rely on tankers for a large share of their water. That water has the most variable quality we see in the city.

What we usually recommend: RO + UV + UF for tanker-dependent societies, with a sediment pre-filter that is easy to change. Purosis or Aqua Classic suit high-TDS water. Aqua+ or Zuric suit homes on municipal supply.

Central and South Pune

Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Warje, Deccan, Shivajinagar, Camp, Sinhagad Road, Katraj, Kondhwa, Undri and NIBM.

The older central areas are mostly on PMC supply with low TDS, and many buildings have old storage tanks. Newer societies in Kondhwa, Undri and parts of Katraj and Sinhagad Road often mix municipal water with tankers.

What we usually recommend: For low-TDS municipal water, a purifier with UV or UF and a TDS controller, which keeps the natural minerals. Clean your building tank twice a year. Use a strong RO where tanker water is common.

Same area, different water: these are general patterns, not guarantees. Two towers on the same road can use different sources. Always check your own tap before choosing a model.

Housing societies: water softeners and RO plants

When a society's water is hard, every flat sees the same problems: white marks on tiles and fittings, geyser elements failing, and washing machines scaling up. Individual purifiers fix only the drinking water. A central water softener on the main supply line fixes the water for every bathroom and appliance.

We test hardness on site free of charge. Read more about water softener systems for housing societies, or see the RO plant price guide for a society drinking-water plant. Committees planning a full system should read our borewell water treatment guide for housing societies.

Does a housing society need a water softener?

If the society's water is hard (white scale on taps, tiles and geysers), a central water softener on the main line protects every flat's bathrooms and appliances. We test hardness free and size the softener from daily consumption.
